ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team takes to Bob King Court for the first time in the 2016-17 season in its exhibition opener versus Western New Mexico Wednesday at 7 p.m. MT.
The game will serve as the first opportunity for the Lobos to face off against another squad this preseason. It is the first of two exhibitions this week, with the second coming on Friday against Eastern New Mexico at 7 p.m. in WisePies Arena – The Pit.

Coaches:
Head coach Craig Neal is in his fourth season as head coach for the Lobos and 10th year at UNM overall. He owns a 59-38 overall record. The Lobos finished fourth in the Mountain West last year with a 10-8 record. Overall, the Lobos finished with a 17-15 record.
The Mustangs are led by first-year head coach Matt Enriquez. Enriquez recently completed his 14th season with WNMU as a player, assistant coach and most recently interim head coach of the women’s basketball team. Mustangs are coming off a 1-26 season and are picked to finish 10th in the Lone Star Conference.
Exhibition History:
New Mexico has won their last 20-straight exhibition games, dating back to May of 2007. They have not lost a preseason exhibition game since Nov. 8, 2001. The first time the Lobos met with the Mustangs was on Feb. 13, 1915 in Silver City, N.M. Western New Mexico won the inaugural contest 39-13, and that victory stands as one of two wins for the Mustangs in the all-time series. UNM and WNMU’s last regular season match-up was in the 2004-05 season. The last time the Lobos faced the Mustangs in an exhibition was in 2014-15.
Series History:
New Mexico has faced Western New Mexico as an exhibition opponent four times since ending their regular season series. The Lobos are 4-0 in those exhibitions, with wins in the 2006-07, 2008-09, 2011-12 and 2014-15 seasons by an average margin of 40.0 points.
Against the Mustangs, the Lobo offense has opened the season strong. UNM has scored 98, 88, 99 and 89 points in those four games for an average offensive performance of 93.5 points per game.
