ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team held a special practice out at the Kirtland Air Force Base Saturday morning. This was the first time the Lobo basketball team has been out to the base.

Head coach Craig Neal and the Lobos introduced themselves in front of on-base personnel before being given special Kirtland AFB 75th Anniversary coins. Kirtland Air Force Base Colonel Michael Harner presented the coins to the coaches and players.

“It’s a unique experience for us,” said Neal. “It’s a good experience for our guys to come out here and be a part of this event. I know how important the base is and what the people mean to us. It was our way of reaching out and sharing a little bit about our team.”

Following the coin presentation, the Lobos stretched and got to work on the court, showing the Lobo fans both sides of the ball, offensive and defense. They finished up with some 5-on-5 work. To conclude the event, the Lobos signed autographs and took pictures with fans.

Kirtland Air Force Base has been an integral part of the Albuquerque community since it was opened in 1942 in the midst of World War II. The University of New Mexico Athletic Department has a special relationship with the base in which the Lobos honor those men and women who serve at this all-important base with specific games dedicated to them.
