New Mexico Game Notes | Air Force Game Notes
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — They say everything is bigger in Texas. That certainly applies to this week’s football game.
The University of New Mexico Lobos (2-3, 1-1 Mountain West) take on the Air Force Falcons (4-1, 1-1 Mountain West) in a game that should have huge implications on the Mountain West race, as both teams look to keep within striking distance of first place in the division. The game features two o fthe best rushing teams over the last five years, and if any of the previous four matchups are any indication, this game shoud be a doozy.
Last year UNM defeated Air Force in the regular season finale, giving the Lobos a 7-5 mark and a 5-3 conference record, plus a win over the eventual division champs. The game featured two long touchdown runs by Jhurell Pressley, a long one by Richard McQuarley, and 377 rushing yards for UNM to go along with 135 passing yards as the Lobos never trailed.
UNM struggled in the game to stop Timothy McVey, who had five touchdowns, two on the ground as he rushed for 102 yards, and three receiving as he caught five passes for 157 yards. However, UNM got the stops when needed, and Delane Hart-Johnson recoeverd the onside kick and returned it, giving UNM the ball at the Air Force 13 where the Lobos put the game away.
With Bob Davie on the sidelines, the Lobos and the Falcons have faed off four times, with each team winning at home. That might mean this game is up in the air, as while Air Force is home, the game is not in Colorado Springs, but in Dallas, Texas at the 92,000-seat Cotton Bowl as a part of the Texas State Fair. The Lobos are coming off a 49-21 loss to No. 19 Boise State while Air Force is also coming off a loss, dropping a 35-26 decision to Wyoming.
