ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Patrick Khouri, a midfielder on the University of New Mexico’s men’s soccer team, has been called up to Jamaica’s U-23 team as it prepares to compete in the Caribbean Federation Union Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Should Jamaica advance past the CFU tournament, it will participate in the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship to see which teams will earn the right to compete in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, which features U-23 teams.

“I’m really excited for Patrick,” UNM head coach Jeremy Fishbein said. “It’s quite an honor for a player to be in the pool for a U-23 tournament. I think he’s prepared to play well and contribute.”

Khouri, who will be a redshirt freshman at UNM this fall, already has international experience. He played on the U-14 and U-15 USMNT squads, and earned the captain’s armband when the team played in Atlas, Mexico. He also has previous time with Jamaica. He was in camp with its U-20 team last year as it attempted to qualify for the U-20 World Cup.

Jamaica’s U-23 squad will leave for the Dominican Republic on June 22 and play matches again the Dominican Republic, Curacao and St. Lucia. Khouri is one of nine college players on the team that is full of professionals from the MLS and even has one player from Norwich City, which was just promoted to the English Premier League.

The CONCACAF Tournament will be held in the United States from October 1-13 with two groups of four. The top two winners from each group after round robin play will advance to the semifinals. The two finalists automatically qualify for the Olympics, while the winner of the third-place match will face Columbia in a playoff for the last spot.
