The University of New Mexico's Mission Statement
It is the mission of The University of New Mexico to serve the citizens of the State of New Mexico and, commensurate with its resources, those of the nation and the world. This mission takes three principle directions: The University develops and offers selected instructional programs at the associate, baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral levels in a wide spectrum of fields. Offerings are designed and modified to provide broad and balanced opportunity for study of the intellectual and cultural endeavors that form the basis of civilization. The University thus helps its students to acquire needed information and skills as well as develop critical judgment and a capacity for discovery. The University conducts research, scholarly studies, and other creative activities in support of both graduate and undergraduate educational programs and as additions to the store of human knowledge. The University provides direct service to the public by applying its capabilities to the resolution of social problems. Generally, such public activities stem from and contribute to the University's research and teaching programs. Mission of UNM's Inter-Collegiate Athletics The mission of inter-collegiate athletics at The University of New Mexico is to provide opportunities for students to participate in inter-collegiate athletics programs as a supplement to their academic experiences at the University. The inter-collegiate athletics program also has an important role in enriching the quality of life for the University and statewide community, and to be a source of pride and encouragement for support of the University among students, faculty and staff, alumni, and other citizens of the state and nation. The inter-collegiate athletics program at The University of New Mexico expects to fulfill its mission responsibilities by: Establishing participation goals for student-athletes that are characterized by standards of academic scholarship and successful completion of academic objectives. Providing equitable opportunities for men and women to participate in a wide range of inter-collegiate athletic programs. Establishing and enforcing standards of social conduct, sportsmanship, and compliance with all policies and rules established to govern the conduct of inter-collegiate athletics. Providing opportunities for student-athletes to have better understanding of critical social issues, to improve their personal communication skills, and to develop leadership qualities that will enhance their capacity to serve as leaders in their communities and in their chosen professional careers. Managing its assigned human and physical resources in a manner that is fiscally accountable. Operating within the policies and rules of the NCAA, any inter-collegiate athletic conference in which the University accepts membership, and all academic and business policies and procedures of the University. Representing the University in a manner, which not only creates positive public support for the athletic program but also enhances the public image of the entire University. Attracting student-athletes, coaches, and other staff to the athletic program who subscribe to all the above attributes of a successful athletic program, and who will represent the University with the highest standards of personal and professional conduct.
